From the recording Ripped Up Tore Up

A phenomenon in fashion. Country people who spent their lives striving to live down the image of torn up, and tattered pants, now proudly display them, with the city slickers who were somehow attracted to experienced clothing.

My wife says, I’m thrifty,
and I admit sometimes I go a little too far
To get the value from the things I buy
But even a man who’s watching his means,
knows when it’s time to buy new jeans
If you’ve seen mine, well, you know why

Because they’re ripped up, tore up…
a little stretched and faded all around the butt
The crotch looks like a piece of tattered macrame’
They’ve got ventilation hole in both knees,
and a little peep hole for my BVD’s
And that’s all the jeans I’ve got today

So I headed on down to the department store,
It’s where I’ve always replaced my jeans
and like I said, I needed some more
But when I got to that section, all the jeans that I could see
Looked like some cruel joke,
they were tryin’ to play on me,
cause they were

Ripped Up, tore up,
A little stretched and faded, all around the butt
And the crotch looked like a piece of tattered macrame’
They had ventilation holes, in both knees,
And some little peep holes for your BVD’s
That’s all the jeans they’ve got today.

But then, I thought this must be
where the poorest folks come to buy.
I guess there’s folks worse off than me,
and that almost made me cry
So I ask the clerk the price of jeans for those just barely staying alive
He pulled the tag and proudly read,
“One Hundred Ninety five”
I said “Why?”

He said they’re ripped up, tore up,
a little stretched and faded all around the butt
And the crotch looks like a piece of tattered macrame’
They’ve got ventilation holes in both knees,
and some little peep holes for your BVD’s
And that’s all the jeans they’ve got today

So I pulled my old jeans from the garbage with a smile
‘Cause I may get cold this winter,
but at least I’ll be in style..

Cause they’re
Ripped Up,Tore Up,
a little stretched and faded all around the butt,
and the crotch looks like a piece of tattered macrame’
They’ve got ventilation holes, for both knees,
and a some little peep holes for your BVD’s
And that’s all the jeans I’ve got,
at least mine didn’t cost a lot,
That’s all the jeans I’ve got today

You probably noticed, I’m not wearing them tonight.
I did find some jeans,
I’m saving those, ….for special occasions.
